We would like to announce our participation with the Switch the Stat program in partnership with HRAI.
At A1 we are always looking to reduce our environmental footprint, and this is just another great way to do just exactly that!
Switch the Stat program is a thermostat replacement and collection program that many HVAC contractors are participating all over Canada. The goal of the program is to encourage the integration of more efficient programmable thermostats into the homes of Canadians, while providing a safe and responsible disposal option for older mercury-containing thermostats. The rapid increase in programmable thermostat installations for residential energy savings has meant that an increased number of older mercury-containing thermostats are being disposed of in household waste and ending up in landfills.
More and more businesses and residential homes are making the switch to programmable thermostats, often not realizing the harmful effects of throwing their old thermostat into the garbage.
Why would we care about this?
Older thermostats contain approximately 2.5-10 grams of mercury and it only takes one gram of mercury to contaminate an eight-hectare lake to the point where the fish in the lake are inedible for a full year. Children and woman of child bearing age are at the most risk because it can inhibit the development of the brain and nervous system.
So what does this mean for the consumer?
What this means is if you would like to upgrade to the latest and greatest in thermostat technology so that you can help reduce your carbon footprint while saving some cash – go for it!
